belgium:trams belgian trams the museum line of thuin - lobbes - anderlues (asvi) lobbes: normal gauge railcar (red) and narrow guage, 9924 and 2354 history of tramway preservation in belgium -by philippe dussart- desart some of the material, submitted by p. dussart-desart and edited by railnutternews,presented here was previously edited and published in 1999 by modern tramway magazine. the "vicinal" tramway network of belgium had reached up to 5000 kilometres, mainly of meter gauge tracks. from this peak period in the 1930's and 40's, there are presently few running remnants, totalling about 100 kilometres: - the coast line from adinkerke - de panne -knokke - the urban network of charleroi - the tourist line to the caves of han-sur-lesse - the museum line of erezée - dochamps (tta) - the museum line of thuin - lobbes - anderlues (asvi) the asvi museum group created in 1972, the asvi museum group quickly gathered a number of cars. first 9924, 9888, then art86, 1936, 2121, 2354, 10292, 10284, 19220, 19405, plus numerous wagons. storage took place in the open at jumet from 1972 until 1974, then at trazegnies. the first shelter was found in 1977 at thuillies, at the end of the line 75 charleroi-thuillies, closed in 1968. thuin: diesel car nr. art300 sound wav art300 the first restored tram, the motor car 9924, was tested successfully in november 1975, between trazegnies depot and forchies (ex-line 63). a special first trip with passengers from trazegnies to thuin took place in november 1977. from the summer 1979, amateurs went to tram driving lessons and historic trams were run between regular vicinal traffic, on the lobbes thuin line (line 92). numerous special trips were also organised with historic tramcars on the whole network of charleroi in the early eighties. lobbes: goods wagon with motorcar 9924 massive line closures took then place from 1982 and the usage of the vicinal network of charleroi was progressively jeopardised. some cars were stored in anderlues, trazegnies was closed in 1990 and some cars were transferred to gosselies. steam engine 303 and pcc 10409 the issue of a dedicated shelter, close to the lobbes-thuin line, had been discussed for ages by the asvi group. fortunately, the grounds of thuin (ouest) railway station were chosen to locate the future museum. an additional batch of trams was transferred from schepdael in 1992, further increasing the number of trams to protect against bad weather. the first serious step towards a museum could be taken only in 1993 with the conversion to meter gauge of remaining railway tracks of thuin (ouest). a comprehensive project was developed, with two buildings, the larger for exhibition purposes, the smaller as workshop. (see drawing). in 1995, the construction of the workshop basement took place, followed by its roof and doors in 1996. the winter 1998 and spring 1999 saw the completion of the first building in thuin (ouest). this workshop, complete with a maintenance pit, meter and narrow gauge tracks (for moving heavy loads) has been equipped to serve temporarily as a small museum, waiting for the completion of the second building. the trackwork connecting the building to the main line is also completed. the present museum   the museum is open, every sunday and public holidays from 11:00 to 18:00, from paast (pâques) until the end of october; saturday and sunday in july and august.special bookings : visits of the museum and special trips can be organized 365 days a year. phone to +32-(0)2 673 48 6 [ +- 20 o’clock]) numerous objects, documents and pictures illustrate the history of the vicinal tramways.   the museum shelters the following trams : - steam engine 303, dating from 1888. the oldest vicinal steam engine in belgium. - steam trailers 1853 and 2026, with soft seats (first class) or wooden seats (second class). - electric motorcar 9073, dating from 1898. oldest electric motorcar completely built in belgium, by electricité & hydraulique (charleroi). - electric trailer 1936, from 1908. - open trailer 8820 from 1910. - motor car 9515 from 1918. - diesel car 300, from 1947 - pcc car 10409, from 1950 motorcar 9888 and luggage van 2354 the tramway line thuin-lobbes the line from thuin to lobbes is a real historical witness. opened in 1914 between anderlues and lobbes, the lobbes - thuin section opened in 1930. it is the very last authentic "vicinal" line, as it enables all types of motive power. thuin: nr. 9073 (oldest belgian tram) and pcc 10409 pcc sound wav starting from thuin (ville-basse), along the river sambre, the main line follows the streets of the city. at the tram stop called thuin (jonction), a spur connects to the site of thuin (ouest), where the museum is situated. thuin (ouest) was an important stop of the previous sncb line 109 mons-lobbes-thuin-chimay. it is now preserved for the tramway museum activities. the main tramway line goes further along the cemetery of thuin, then crosses the river sambre on its own bridge, in parallel with the railway line charleroi-paris. after the stop of thuin (pont du nord), the tramway climbs on a track reservation to the hills of lobbes. in the background, only the tram passenger can admire the abbey of lobbes, the old church of saint ursmer (the foundations are dating from the ixth century). when you arrive at lobbes (entreville) , the track is laid along the road to anderlues. trams run on the line every sunday afternoon from june until october. liège: restoration of ar86 please visit the asvi website http://www.asvi.be for further information railnutternews home trolleys diesels steamers australia subways guest book mars trainfans models events rail rhymes subscribe e - mail
